So What’s A Hippie Anyway?

It’s funny that people now think the Hippie Costume is really a costume at all.  In the 60′s and 70′s, it was just the clothes we wore.  It was a fun era, and it was easy to be hippie then simply because people were hanging out just to have a good time, listening to music, and dancing with your girlfriend.

What was so cool was that you didn’t think too much about what you were wearing.  It could be your favorite old blue jeans, a psychedelic looking shirt, and if it was cool outside, maybe a vest or that groovy leather jacket with those long stringy things.

Being a Hippie was just as much about an attitude than your hippie costume.  Of course the costume is important, but it’s the total look too.  Not only did it include our clothes, we grew our hair so long it flops around, so we held it back with a headband.  We also had homemade tie-dyed shirts.  It was all about creativity, our hippie beads, and flip someone the peace sign.

Now we make it easy for everyone.  To be hippy, you can pick up one of these terrific costumes, and like the true hippie, you can do it on a budget, because everyone knows a hippie was usually tight on money or simply without money – flat broke! (I see a colourful theme developing here.)

The music was also a big influence on what we chose to wear.  Our outfits were just as colourful as the bands and music we listened and danced to.  Want to be a hippie? Think of Woodstock, just you and your girlfriend, dancing to the music.  It did not matter if you were into the Beatles, Abba or even disco music.

So when putting together your hippie costume, keep a few things in mind: think groovy, think psychedelic, think big hair, having a good time, your hippie beads, and have an attitude of a cool cat.  If you don’t have long hair, then definately check out some wigs, but don’t forget the headband. Most of the costumes here come with a headband, and even more of those match the outfit!

Kids love the hippie costume, and when you think about it, hippies were basically kids back in the 60s through the 70s.  Our attire was flowery, sometimes surely, but we were all family.  Peace, love and Leon Russell, right?  Or was it peace, love and rock and roll.

So before you make your selection, carry with you an attitude in your head, and design your hippie costume around some of the theme items mentioned here.  And girls, you are a big part of this Halloween party, and no, you don’t have to go out and tie-dye your shirt or crocheted a sweater.

As a matter of fact, the girls have some great retro costumes, hippy dress, and even some tight, baby face white skirts that are Far Out!   Just look at the last hippie costume shown here. (of course there not old clothes, just simply new costumes with a fresh new look that is fun for kids and adults alike.

So grab your hippie costume, put on that leather vest, include your flip flops, wear your hippie beads, worn out jeans, and polish up the peace sign jewelry.  And your costume will not bust your budget either.

From The Hit Hippie Movie “Hair”, Comes The Hit Song “Hair”

Best hippie movie musical, and Hair the song is great!

“Grow it, show it, Long as I can grow it – My hair”

Hair The Musical was probably the best hippie musical of the entire hippie era.  It seemed like all hippie actors (who were avoiding Vietnam) were pouring out of colleges and expressing their sexual free living in scripts like this.  The musical really goes to the source of the hippie time: it’s all about the hair, and of course the hippie clothes.

The production expressed the feelings then, about war, Vietnam, free sexual expression and demonstrations at colleges and universities.  Now the hippie-era is captured in a time capsule in every production of the Hair.  Want to feel like a hippie again, go see Hair, feel free to express your sexual freedom while protesting the present war at colleges everywhere.  Be free again: go see Hair the musical.  If you missed the production, catch the movie Hair.
